The Stooges, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers
On March 15, The Stooges are finally going to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It’s been a long time coming and Max’s Kansas City is very excited that this important and influential band is getting its due. Max’s played a vital role in The Stooges’ career — band was in a bit of limbo around 1971 or so and it was then that Iggy Pop went to New York and met David Bowie at Max’s Kansas City. With Bowie’s help, Iggy reunited The Stooges and created the band’s third album Raw Power in 1973.
Iggy Pop by Kerin Rose
Even before I found out that Iggy Pop and I had the same birthday, and before I found out he had a career boost by meeting with Bowie at Max’s, I’ve always had an inexplicable fondness for him. I don’t believe in the concept of putting people in the positions of role models, but the go-big-or-go-home way in which Pop conducted his life and conveyed his art form is something to admire. Remember: this is a man who eloquently re-appropriated the term “punk rock” on the CBC [Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.]
As a “professional bedazzler” my first inclination when looking at the list of minds who have come out of Max’s was to write about Bowie, and while aesthetically, that’s where I align myself, I come from a much more Iggy Pop place. His work was always the perfect balance of brilliantly executed and purposeful chaos; never without meaning and never lacking substance. To the uneducated few, Iggy just makes noise, and I just play with glitter, but there is a much deeper and much more substantial method to our madness.
