"The Max's Kansas City Project allowed me to pay my rent and have a place to live when I was faced with being homeless. It is because of the Max's Kansas City Project's caring spirit for creative people that artist's have somewhere to turn in their hour of desperation. Bless you all." --2002 Emergency Funding Recipient

The max's kansas city project, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, was established in June 2001 in memory of Mickey Ruskin and Laura Dean, and all the other max's habitués who are now angels. It is the intention of the organization to continually strive to reach our goal with a level of excellence that will exceed any and all expectations. We will continue to foster the spirit that was inherent in Mickey Ruskin's philosophy.

We are dedicated to providing resources and funding to financially distressed individuals in the creative arts for medical aid, housing and legal aid. (Special consideration is given, but not limited, to "max's kansas city's extended family," those individuals who have made a contribution to the arts over the years.

It is also the goal of the max's kansas city project to foster a greater awareness and education on the dangers and destructive results of substance abuse through workshops and educational materials. The Max's era was an era of excess and exploration, however, unfortunately we lost many of our max's family members as a result of the abuse of drugs and alcohol. Future generations should be educated on the value of life's opportunities, and the harsh realities of wasteful self destruction.

We hope "in the future" to offer two scholarships each year to minority students entering college in the creative arts:

  • The Mickey Ruskin grant in visual arts
  • The Laura Dean grant in the performing arts

We need to take the initiative while we are all still healthy and capable. The organization cannot accomplish its end without your support! The extended family that max's has created must help!

Some of the events the members will organize and have organized to support the organization each year related to the arts will consist of:

  • International Art exhibitions, Events and Fundraisers
  • Benefit Concerts
  • Storytelling evenings
  • Production & distribution of videos, films, recordings & documentaries by and about members of the Max's extended family
  • Gatherings by invitation; e.g., Dinner events, cocktail parties, poetry readings
  • Fashion shows, Theater projects
  • Grants for special projects; e.g.,educational videos and seminars, especially relating to the negative effects of substance abuse as many max's habitués have died from causes related to substance abuse.
