WE WANT YOUR MAX'S STORIES!

Have you got a great story to tell about Max's Kansas City? Is it interesting? Outrageous even? Because just when you thought High on Rebellion, Yvonne Sewall-Ruskin's excellent published account of the Max's years, was the definitive story, we at Maxskansascity.com got to thinking there is probably a whole lot more to tell - enough, in fact, to produce an entirely new book. So whether you hung out at Max's with Andy Warhol, David Bowie or Francesco Scavullo or not - and, seriously, we're not just looking for celeb tales here - we want to hear your stories, with a view to publication. "They HAVE to be interesting!" Yvonne cheerily instructs, to which the rest of the Max's editorial team soberly adds: "Non libelous, absent of malice and, hopefully, TRUE!" Yvonne will lead a Max's editorial panel to periodically award a Max's Kansas City T-shirt to the sender of the story (or stories) the panel deems most engaging, while the author of every story used in the proposed book will be credited in the publication. It is the editorial team's hope to feature periodically submitted stories on the Max's website.

IMPORTANT: Submit your stories only to: maxtales@hotmail.com. Only those stories sent to this address will be considered. Submission will be deemed permission by the author to publish.

Aerosmith fly Max's flag on MTV

1

Aerosmith paid homage to their Max's Kansas City roots in an MTV tribute to the band, entitled Icons. Steven Tyler and Co., who secured their first record deal with Columbia after Clive Davis saw them at a show at Max's in 1971, performed in front of a backdrop emblazoned with the Max's logo above the Aerosmith wings emblem. The backdrop was later autographed by each member of the band and is now with Max's Project President Yvonne Sewall-Ruskin in New York for safekeeping - a gift from the band.

During Aerosmith's typically high-powered set, Steven Tyler introduced the song Train Kept A Rollin' by saying, "We're going to do a song that we did at Max's Kansas City, and our manager back then, Frank Connelly, said, "The last song ... tell them the name of the song is We Don't Want To [expletive deleted] You Lady, We Just Want To Eat Your Sandwiches."

The MTV show, which also featured Kid Rock, Pink, Train, Shakira and Nas, was recorded in Los Angeles. In a pre-recorded interview, Tyler said, "We're still in the same band together, and we're still the same babies that were in the sandbox in 1972 ... as it is now in the year 2002."

Max's Project President Yvonne Sewall-Ruskin was thrilled by the Icons show, commenting, "It was great to see the band playing in front of the Max's name. It looked fabulous."
It's unconfirmed that Tyler uttered a "Thank you, Mickey' during the performance - but if true, it can be safely assumed the singer was referring to Mickey Ruskin, the late Max's owner and Sewall-Ruskin's former husband, who died in 1983.

"Someone else who saw the show said they heard Steven say 'Thanks, Mickey,' but I didn't hear it," Sewall-Ruskin said. Read a review of the Aerosmith Icons show on the band's website. Click here
