J.D.Daugherty on Mend After Crash

J.D. Daugherty, long-time drummer with the Patti Smith Band, is expected to make a full recovery despite sustaining serious leg injuries in a motorcycle accident in New York City.

The musician was riding his motorcyle in downtown Manhattan last Friday night (Feb. 8) when he was involved in a head-on collision with a motorist.

J.D. was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he has so far undergone four surgeries on a crushed leg.

Jason Liebman, a spokesman in the press office at Arista, the Patti Smith Band's record company, said this evening that J.D. had been wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and did not sustain any head injuries."In fact," Liebman added, "my boss spoke to him in the hospital today. He's going to be in the hospital at least another week. He's expected to make a full recovery."

Liebman said it was not known if J.D. will be able to play drums on the Patti Smith Band's tour, which is due to start in the Spring.
The band is scheduled to appear in the Greenpoint/Williamsburg Waterfront Task Benefit at the Warsaw venue in Brooklyn on March 2.

The thoughts of Yvonne Sewall-Ruskin and the Max's Kansas City Project web team are with J.D. and those around him, and wish him a speedy and successful recovery.
